Gö Strade Bianche Revised 79km – April 2 2023

Like the March Hare a character in the British curiouser and curiouser novel Alice in Wonderland we can all get a bit crazy in the springtime, but unlike that hare I am not perpetually waiting for the Mad Hatters six o´clock tea party . Instead, I live for the moment when the warmth of spring will burst into life.

On this ride a cruel and very cold wind blew making me doubt my sanity as it almost turned me into an icicle (I was never that cold in the winter).

I can´t really complain because this time last year the spring flowers were peeking out of a carpet of snow!

I had been hoping to ride a revised version of the 70 plus kilometer Gö Strade Bianche for a long time, sadly my crash in May put it on hold and so it was very cool to finally ride it especially as I rode safely over the same spot where I came to grief.

The significant difference of the revised route is it now cuts out an asphalt climb away from Friedland toward Marzhausen and includes a more direct additional gravel road to Niedergandern. Plus, there is an added stretch of tree lined white gravel that almost takes us into Thuringia, but we turn away from what was once the Iron Curtain.

The ride features 14 significant climbs the majority coming in the eastern leg back to Gö and much of the route is rolling in nature.

Remember the Gö Strade Bianche motto: Close your eyes and imagine you are in Tuscany and only open them again at the end of the bike tour/ Close your eyes and think yourself in Tuscany and then open them at ride end.
